Which one should I choose? Spectra or Cable?
Spectra (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, UHMPE) is the most commonly used braid in spearfishing. Known for its high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, Spectra is best suited for hunting softer fleshed fish – White Seabass, Yellowtail, AJ, Grouper, Rainbow Runner, Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi/Dorado where using a cable may have the tendency to saw through the flesh of the fish when shot.
Cable (Stainless Steel braid) is best suited for diving in and around wrecks, caves, rigs and structures where fish can swim into after being shot and rub against damaging the spectra and potentially cutting loose. Cable is also best suited for tough, bony fish, or fish that could cut the spectra with their teeth if shot near the head – GT/Ulua, Wahoo, Billfish, Pargo/Cubera, Grouper, Dogtooth Tuna
