Frequently asked questions

How long will my gun take to build?

Due to the nature of our business, we typically do not keep excess inventory on hand; all guns are custom built to order. Build time is approximately 2-4 weeks and varies depending on the order volume. If order volume is unusually high, it may take up to 8 weeks to complete. Once order is placed, we will confirm with you an estimated time of completion. Since all guns are custom built, once construction of your speargun has begun, there is no refund for the work.

Which spear gun should I buy?

We offer a variety sizes to accommodate all diving conditions. Water visibility and target species will greatly influence the size of gun you purchase.

If you hunt in murky, low visibility conditions, you will want to purchase a shorter gun to match your visibility. If you are hunting in clear, high visibility conditions, just as easily as you can see the fish, the fish can see you. It would be wiser to purchase a longer gun to give you the added range you need to safely land your fish.

Target species will also play a role in the length of gun and power setting you choose. If you are typically hunting larger fish (>25lbs/10kg) then you will want a larger gun capable of handling a higher power setting and thicker shaft so you have the penetration needed to land your target species. For smaller fish typically found along the reef, in cracks and crevices, smaller guns, lower power settings and thinner shafts are more than adequate for landing your target species.

Reel or Float Line?

Reels are best used when hunting in strong current or around structures that could tangle float lines or create excess drag making diving difficult or inefficient. They are very effective when hunting along the reef, in kelp or around underwater structures like rigs, wrecks, and jetties. Reels are best used when hunting smaller fish however many large fish can be landed on a reel depending on the skill of the diver.

Float lines are typically available in two main styles – vinyl and bungee.

Vinyl float lines are the most versatile as they offer great abrasion resistance. A float line gives you the ability to shoot a fish at any depth and let go of your gear to ascend to the surface unrestricted. When rigged as a break-away, the float line is connected to your shooting line allowing your shaft to separate from your gun reducing the drag on the fish. Attaching your vinyl float line to a float at the surface, allows you to safely fight your fish from the surface without having a limited amount of line on your reel making this setup ideal for any hunting situation or depth. Vinyl float lines are typically available in a multitude of colors making them highly visible from the surface and are very economically priced.

Bungee float lines are constructed of a stretchy material that has the ability to stretch up to 2 times its original length. Used almost exclusively for blue water and in combination with a float system, this adds to the stopping power when hunting larger game. When a fish runs after being speared, the fish will slowly stretch out the bungee line increasing the resistance on the fish which helps to eliminate tearing of soft fleshed fish. Bungee float lines are recommended for blue water use only, NOT around structures where abrasion may damage the stretchy material.

**PLEASE NOTE – YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DIVE WITH A FLOAT AND A FLAG NO MATTER HOW YOU SET UP YOUR GUN. FLOATS SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 50FT AWAY FROM YOU WHILE DIVING AT ALL TIMES. ONE FLOAT PER DIVER IN THE WATER. THIS IS FOR SAFETY REASONS.

I think my gun is under/over powered. How do I adjust my power bands?

All guns are rigged standard with 2 – 5/8″ (16mm) Primeline power bands at a length that offers 325% elongation when loaded. We’ve found this to be the most efficient setup for most divers however everyone is different. Some people are naturally stronger than others, have longer arms or different loading techniques so finding the right setup for the individual is encouraged. If you find that our stock setup is too strong making it hard to load or creating too much “punch” during the shot, you can use longer bands in the same diameter, or use thinner bands say 9/16″ (14mm). If you find that our stock setup is too weak and you are used to more power in your shot, you can shorten your bands an inch or so and see if that works for you. A good power range for your bands irregardless of the thickness is between 300-350%, anything more than that will result in increased deterioration of the rubber.
